Hunkering Down for Harvey

Preparation Made Life ‘Normal’ for Keith

There are basically two types of people in the world: those who have prepared for a disaster and are self-reliant, and those who haven’t prepared and are dependent on a slow-moving government.

It’s a choice, and Keith of Driscoll, Texas has made his. He’s self-reliant.

Because he and his wife live on the Texas coast, being self-reliant came in pretty handy when Hurricane Harvey charged in late August. The storm destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 residents and killed 90-plus people in the Houston area.

Keith could have evacuated, but decided to weather the storm because he owned the Alexapure Pro water filtration system and the Patriot Power Generator 1500… both from 4Patriots.

“If you’re not prepared to sit at your house and take care of yourself, then there’s nobody who’s going to take care of you,” he said. “You’re on your own. You want to go live in a football stadium with cots and sleeping bags on the floor for a month? Well, no thank you.

“When we moved here 15 years ago, we needed a clean source of water because our water’s not very good. It has a real strong chlorine smell to it. We started buying filtered water from the store, but it was really getting to be a pain, filling and lugging five-gallon bottles in and out of the vehicle.

“So, we bought the Alexapure Pro water filtration system and it worked fantastically. The best thing we ever did was filter our water through the Alexapure filter.”

When Harvey came calling, Keith and his wife were glad they had clean water. They were also happy to have their emergency generator.

“We live close to the coast, so it’s good to have hurricane and storm preparedness. We’ve seen evacuations before, and it’s not good on the highway. Instead, we boarded up all the windows and had our water ready to go.

“I set my Patriot Power Generator out and we were ready for whatever hit and whatever happened. It sounded like a train out there for 12 or 14 hours. The wind took everything out. All the glass was blown out of every building for hundreds of miles. Everybody lost power. Nobody was getting any of their groceries. Nothing was available for a week or more.

“People were standing in line for hours for water. There was no fuel, there were no grocery stores open. The power was out, but I just plugged everything into my Patriot Power Generator. Plugged the TV in, and we had coffee. We were just living a normal life. Everything was normal.”

So, Keith, what is the lesson here for others who were not as prepared as you were?

“Be prepared to be self-reliant,” he said. “And have water and have food. I could hunker down here and live here for six months and not ever have to leave. I feel self-reliant. I don’t have to rely on anybody.”
