Self-Defense Is a Piece of the Self-Reliance Pie
Put as simply as possible, self-reliance means being able to take care of ourselves when bad stuff happens.
OK, that’s it. Goodnight, everybody.
No, just kidding. There’s more. But being as prepared as possible for ANY type of emergency is certainly a good way to describe self-reliance.
Be Prepared for a Physical Attack
There is one thing that not everyone thinks to consider. And that is preparing for a physical attack is also a crucial part of survival. An attack can happen outdoors on the streets or even inside your home.
Many of us, at one time or another, have been the victim of a physical attack. And it always seems to happen when we least expect it.
Being self-reliant means knowing we might not be able to count on anyone else to defend us. And that includes the police.
They can’t be everywhere at the same time. So they might not arrive quickly enough to help us. Even if someone calls 9-1-1 right away.
That’s why it’s crucial we make sure we can handle a physical assault in one way or another.
Her Gun May Have Saved Her Life
It’s also why we enjoy hearing stories about people who have done exactly that. They had no desire to cause anyone else harm. But when they were attacked, they defended themselves and lived to tell about it.
Like the Illinois woman who was able to scare off a man with her concealed carry firearm without firing a shot. He first jumped into her car when she was stopped. And proceeded to cut her with a knife and forced her to drive to a rural area.
Once they stopped, she was able to grab her gun, and he then ran off. She drove herself to the hospital. Later police arrested him for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery with a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated assault.
Home Invaders Get Rude Awakening
There are countless examples like that. People exercising self-reliance by defending themselves against unwarranted attacks. Everyday heroes protecting their own life and their families.
Like the 81-year-old Florida man who fired shots at another man in his mid-30s who had broken a house window and was trying to break into the home. The intruder immediately ran away from the house, got in his truck and drove away.
Like the North Carolina woman who heard noises toward the back of her house and then saw two men trying to break in. She grabbed her gun, held it up so they could see it and ordered them to leave. Fortunately, they did.
Self-Defense a God-Given Right
None of us wakes up in the morning and say to ourselves, “Gee, I sure hope I get to shoot someone today.”
All physical confrontations – especially those involving a deadly weapon – should be avoided if at all possible. But sometimes it’s just not possible.
If you are being attacked or are in danger of being attacked, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to protect yourself.
That’s self-preservation. And self-preservation is a big part of self-reliance.
The older I get, the more I appreciate my guns.
