Using your phone as a self-defense weapon.

Many people use hard plastic cases for their cell phones to protect them from being damaged when the phones bang onto tabletops, hard floors, cement sidewalks, etc., after they’re dropped. The case serves to protect the phone, but what if it could also protect you?

When people are mugged on the street, it usually happens very quickly and they don’t have anything in their hands with which to protect themselves. But people often have their cell phones in their hands, and if a phone could be used as protection, it would be. Now, perhaps it can.

A new cell phone case called the Yellow Jacket is being developed with a built-in stun gun to help people protect themselves if they’re attacked. The makers say that it produces 650,000 volts of energy through the electrodes on its upper edge and that it is capable of taking down a fully-grown adult male. It also features a standby battery for 20 additional hours of usage.

Check out this video, “A Stun Gun on a Cell Phone?” It shows what the case looks like and how it operates as a stun gun.  While I think the cell phone/stun gun combination is a good idea, I’m wondering if it really packs enough of a punch to do you some good when you’re dealing with an attacker. In both instances in the video where they show the stun gun application being used, the recipient of the shock appears to be stung but ends up smiling. Hopefully they had it on the lowest possible setting for the demonstration because I sure don’t want my attacker smiling when I defend myself against him.

How would you like to have a cell phone case that doubles as a stun gun? Would that be your weapon of choice if you were attacked? Do you think a cell phone stun gun would be strong enough to immobilize an attacker long enough for you to escape? Please weigh in with your thoughts.
