About one month after Donald Trump upset Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, President Barack Obama declared that he would have won a third term had he been the Democrats’ candidate.
I wonder how that statement made Hillary feel?
Regardless of how tactless Obama’s comment was, it’s possible he was right. After all, Americans re-elected him in 2012 when he squared off against a far less controversial opponent than Trump. And that was despite everything that occurred during the first four years of Obama’s presidency.
But even if he was right, Obama certainly did not do much good for fellow Democratic politicians seeking election while he was in office. At every level of government, Democrats lost ground while Obama sat in the Oval Office (or vacationed in Hawaii, as the case may be).
The Dems lost – get this – more than 1,000 state and federal posts during Obama’s presidency, including state legislative and congressional seats, governorships, and, of course, the presidency.
The Democrats had 55 U.S. senators when he took office, but wound up with only 46. They had 256 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, but that number dwindled to 194. There were 28 Democratic governors in 2008, but now there are only 16 among the 50 states.
When the majority of American voters selected Obama in 2008, they bought into his “Hope” and “Change” rhetoric. In 2012, they fell for his “Forward” slogan. Well, plenty Changed during his time in office, and now we can Hope that Republican majorities in the House, the Senate and state governorships can translate into going Forward with making America great again.
