‘The Breaking Point’ Has Arrived… Trump Administration Declares Illegal Immigration Must End Now

President Donald Trump has hung out the “No Vacancy” sign.

He has declared that the U.S. is full. He added that the country’s immigration system can no longer handle the mass influx of illegal immigrants.

Kirstjen Nielsen is the former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary. She compared the illegal immigration problem to a Category 5 hurricane disaster.

Kevin McAleenan is the Customs and Border Protection Commissioner. He said, “The breaking point has arrived.”

Obama Administration Officials Agree

Even a former DHS secretary in the Obama Administration agreed. “By anyone’s definition, by any measure, right now we have a crisis at our southern border,” Jeh Johnson said.

And he’s not alone. Mike Morgan served as the head of border patrol in the Obama Administration.

“We are experiencing a crisis greater than we have in recent times,” he said. “The entire immigration system is overrun.

“They’re not at the breaking point. They’re past it,” he added. “The (Mexican) cartels further exploit our open borders, increasing the threat to our country.”

Trump Threatens to Close Border

Trump is saying what he did before. That the illegal immigration problem warrants his declaration of a “National Emergency.”

“Congress must get together and immediately eliminate the loopholes at the border,” he said. Trump added he will close the border completely if no action is taken.

So far, Trump does not have the full support of the Republican Party for that potential move. But his threat appeared to make Mexican officials step up their southern border control measures.

“We are doing everything we can to simply avoid a tragedy,” McAleenan said. “But with these numbers, with the types of illnesses we’re seeing at the border, I fear that it’s just a matter of time.”

Illegal Immigrant Numbers Staggering

It is estimated nearly 1 million illegal immigrants will be apprehended at the U.S.-Mexican border this year. That’s based on the current pace. Recently in a two-day period, more than 8,000 migrants were apprehended crossing the border.

“That is by far a greater number than anything I saw on my watch in my three years as secretary of Homeland Security,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he believes there is a way to attack the problem. But it will require Republicans and Democrats working together.

“There are answers to this problem,” he said. “If we can strip away the politics and the emotion.”

Trump Blames Dems and Mexico

Trump and others in his administration blame the Democrats for the problem. They’ve been fighting his plans to lower illegal immigration. He also placed blame on the Mexican government.

“If we don’t make a deal with Congress… or if Mexico doesn’t do what they should be doing… then we’re going to close the border,” he said. “Or we’re going to close large sections of the border.”

Trump said he is not interested in a summit with Latin American leaders to discuss the situation. “I think we’ve done very well without the summit.”

‘No Match’ Equals ‘No Más’

One way to fight illegal immigration is by sending “no match” letters. This practice has been used before.

And it looks like the administration will revive it. This strategy involves the Social Security Administration sending letters. They go to businesses across the country.

These letters notify companies when employees’ Social Security numbers don’t match records.

It is then the individual’s responsibility to fix the problem. If there was a name change or clerical error, it’s fixable. If the numbers were fake in the first place, the individual will probably find themselves off the payroll.

‘Anti-Immigrant Agenda?’

These types of letters were discontinued in 2012 when the Obama Administration halted them.

The executive director of the National Immigration Law Center spoke up. She accused the Trump Administration of an “anti-immigrant agenda.”

“This fits squarely within its overall strategy of instilling fear and chaos among immigrant workers,” she said.

Mark Hinkle is a Social Security Administration spokesperson. He said they are merely attempting to improve the accuracy of their record keeping.

No Sympathy for Lawbreakers

Dan Stein carried it a step farther. He is president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

He says he has no sympathy for undocumented immigrants who use fake or stolen Social Security numbers to gain jobs.

“Illegal immigration is ultimately everybody’s problem,” he said. He said there is a reason it’s blown out of control in the last 30-some years. It’s “because employers have not been willing to do their fair share in ensuring that American jobs go to American workers.”

Some employers have responded to that statement by saying it’s not their jobs to enforce immigration laws.

What Do You Think?

I’d love to know how you feel about this situation.

Do you believe the illegal immigration problem has reached an emergency stage? Is Trump taking the right steps to try to resolve the problem?
