4 steps to off-grid water
Water. We can’t live without it. When the big one hits, you had better have your water supply safe and sound. But how do you do that when terrorists know that this our Achilles’ heel? Just a few drops of an evil substance in your local water supply could wipe out the entire town. Or a storm could wipe out the clean water supply for months. Ask the folks in New Orleans about that, they still don’t have the water they need.
So what can you do? You already know that you should have at least a 30-day supply of water on hand. But what about after 30 days? Wouldn’t it just be easier to supply your own water?
Of course that is the choice I have made for my family.
We have a well and cistern that allows us to pump and store our own water. It wasn’t cheap, but considering the importance of water it was worth every penny. We power the pump with our off grid solar power system, so we don’t have to worry about power outages either. If you have a well and are on grid power, you should consider having backup power and a backup storage tank of at least 500 gallons.
Another option is to tap a local spring for your water. These are more prevalent that you might think. I had a house in Alabama that had a running spring 20 feet below the surface of the yard. Local geology maps would help you find them. You could tap this through a drill-hole or a find where it daylights and divert it or bottle it. Be sure to get containers that will be easy to fill out of a source like a spring, like a siphon and 5-gallon drum.
Capturing rainwater is probably more practical for most people. Set up catchments under your roof gutters and fill them during the next storm. You will want to store it as airtight as possible for long-term storage, and you will probably want a simple water filter system as well.
Now you can generate water from thin air too. There are atmospheric water generators that take humid air and convert it to water. They have built-in filtration and can produce anywhere from 3-10 gallons per day in the right climate. They have the added benefit of dehumidifying the air. The only problem with these machines is that they use quite a bit of power, something you would only be able to depend on if you generate your own electricity.
Will you be ready? You had better consider your water source, and how it would be affected in a disaster.
Just about anywhere you live, you can drill your own well: https://drillyourownwell.com/
I used this technique and put down a 47 foot well in 13 hours. I have 8 feet of clean, pure water standing in the well pipe. I installed a hand pump http://www.ezwaterwellhandpumps.com/ to feed a 250 gallon holding tank and have a 12-volt shureflow RV pump to provide pressure for showers, washing dishes, etc.
5 gallons will not last long.I know you have monsoon season out your way.Perhaps it would be a good idea to add to your supply using that rainwater when it is available for times when it is not.If this all goes down we need to assume it will happen at the worst possible time as seasons go.If you have no gutters on your home,go to the hardware and buy some sections of gutter and get some old milk crates that are NOT the same height.Put these sections on the crates and a container at the low end so when it rains, the gutter sections will fill them up.The higher you can make these “stands” the larger the container you can use.If you have trees around you can affix these gutter section(s) in the branch “V” to get a better height.I used a ladder for one and got it high enough I can put a 55 gallon drum under it.Also, when at the grocery buy ONE bottle of water every time you go.You really won’t miss the small cost from week to week.Buying vitamin water is also a good idea if you build up a supply, then rotate the stock. I get my small bottles of water at the dollar store, cheaper and larger that your small grocery store bottles
Wow, I actually didn’t know that there were atmospheric water generators that can actually make water from humid air. I’m very curious to learn more about these machines, or if they can still be useful in areas that are really dry. Either way, it’s amazing that this was invented, and I’m excited to see what new inventions that could be made in the future.
I frequently catch the water from my air conditioner and use it for times I need clean water for things like batteries, steam irons, etc.
How do you know if your area has laws against collecting rain water? I remember a news story in my area a few months back that talked about people being fined for collecting rain. I want to have a well installed on my property but collecting rain water sounds like it would be a good back up.
When the SHTF time arrives, there won’t be ‘agents’ out looking for rainwater collectors. I care about the welfare of my family far more than I do the absurdity of some insidious law by overreaching legislators.
BTW, ALL the water on earth, with the exception of any jettisoned by the space station, etc., is still on earth. It IS a reusable resource.
You can rig up a see saw balance that diverts the first few gallons of rainwater to a waste bucket which then pivots to fill your containment. The bucket has a small hole that drains to set up for next time. This means the roof, etc is rinsed and avoids most of the dirt and pollution. Also it helps to have a multi story and set your containment high so that you have some water pressure without electricity. For drinking, using bleach to disinfect, besides taste, has been implicated in arterial inflammation plaque issues. For a very few bucks on ebay you can get a personal water high performance filter. Heres drinking to you
How do you find geological maps of your area?
Many hiking maps and local game and wildlife maps will show natural water sources
I live on an Island in the Pacific.. the Big Island. We used to have only one port.. then two but and earthquake knocked one out of full service for many years.. Thankfully the sending port was not disabled. We depend on barge shipments to bring food and supplies.
I have many times seen empty store shelves for many reasons. We can be concerned for earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes EMPs and solar events . like a lot of the mainlanders.
Realistically, planning ahead has to be a way of life here and on the mainland for all of us.
Almost any day, some one some where has their life line broken .
Frank’s forums and his food supply packaging give us more great ideas AND the food is great! Try it!
Franks food supplies are NOT that expensive.
…Practice before you need it. And get some extras to help your neighbor.
Maybe we should all be reminded that if /when the supplies do come, you may not be the priority .
You best plan on helping your future self, starting NOW
Are we ready???
And to the comments earlier.. Yes! , the charletons abound.
Frank is NOT one of them..
Frank.. thanks again! from all of us,… for all you do for us.
I agree. Food4Patriots is a great company and the food is super. Wouldn’t be found in a SHTF situation without it.
Thanks, Frank.
I don’t care if you are a Capitalist, it all sounds good to me & besides it make sense to do this stuff. I’ve bought the food, the generator & now working on the water problem. Keep it coming Frank.
i’M ALWAYS SUSPICIOUS OF THE OPINIONS AND THE WRITTEN STATEMENTS OF UNEDUCATED FOLKS. THEY GIVE THEIR CREDIBILITY AWAY BY POOR SPELLING AND BAD GRAMMER IN THEIR COMMUNICATION. SOME MAY BE SMART; BUT USUALLY NOT; AND THEY ALWAYS SEEM ANXIOUS TO BE HEARD . BE VERY CAREFUL IN ACCEPTING THEIR OPINIONS WITHOUT CHECKING AND VERIFYING. EXPERIENCE SPEAKING TO YOU, HERE.
“Grammar” not “grammer”.
Rex Edmonds….When commenting online….All Uppercase letters constitutes shouting! Most people consider this to be very rude. Ignorance is usually the problem for this type of “Shout Posting” so don’t be so quick to judge people “uneducated folks” to doesn’t take a lot of education to have good old “Common Horse Sense”! Thank you to all the uneducated people out there that have great ideas that truly work and keep us safe! I have gleaned a lot from all of your great ideas….Please keep them coming! Thanks
Hi Rex,
I’ll settle for a person with the “backwoods” knowledge and poor spelling and grammar over the educated fool with good grammar and spelling any day of the week. We will be living like “kings and queens” with our knowledge of the environment, animals and gardening while you all are wondering what the hell do I do when you have run out of your “store bought” supplies, seeds, water, etc. Us’ns be huntin, trappin, pickin an a plantin, workin the still, runnin the trot line an havin a good ol time, doncha no. Pool water can be used for water back up if you use a Chem less system on your pool.
Salt water systems pools can’t be use for drinking unless you have a reverse osmosis system.
Saltwater out of the ocean requires a big reverse osmosis system and will be require to be flushed a lot.
I figure with 15000gal pool I have back up water for a while.
I am installing four solar panel system to run pool pump during the day. 4 panels two converters and wire direct to pump.
If this works really well I will do another 4 panel ,converter system to run outside house A/C unit too.
I enjoy your site.
Thanks

If you are seriously thinking about a better hand water pump for the homestead with high volume, then you need to think outside the box. It is a bit pricey, but considering the day we live in and the issues of water, its worth its weight in GOLD!! The WaterBuck Pump is capable of 188 gallons a minute.

Every thing hook up Will go down.
The US did testing during late 60 and 70 in the atmosphere near country’s I won’t mention. It fried everything that was turn on.
You need equipment DE power and stored in a metal shielded grounded room. Not hook to the grid.
An extra car alternator and ecm. If you have an older car with points you will need a set of points coil and alternator.

I have those 2 oz water filters to use laying on your belly by a lake; but am interested in a larger stand up filter system to filter 3 gal+ of water at a time. Any good filter to do the job we all will need down the road??
I use a ZEN gravity fed water filter, it has a ceramic filter and a five stage filter! Water, tea, coffee etc. taste great!
It comes in 3gal, 4gal or 5gal sizes, depending on how much you want to spend, they start @ about $80 and up!
When it is warm enough to run your Air Conditioner you can collect the condensate from it if you have power to run the AC.
A dehumidifier works also.
I read just about every post you make. I live in Florida and back up on a retention pond. Not very good water and pretty foul smelling. However, I purchased a Water Purifier that should do the job; as well as a Water BOB to put in my tub. I also have about 4-month supply of prepackaged food (25 year life) and I’m “looking” to purchase a rain collection system and a pretty nice stand-alone garden system for growing vegetables, etc.
I’ve been told that in an emergency, we can drink the water in our hot water heater. What do you think?
absolutely! I’ve even seen some clever setups where folks will have an additional, broken water heater on the cold water side of their circuit so that they always have a reserve of freshly turned over water at the ready.
Many things like these suggestions are Not available if you live in an apartment or condo, I have saved all one and half gallon milk, orange juice and bleach etc. bottles for a couple years all washed out and waiting empty, After it becomes obvious that the National Guard that has been assigned to try to operate the water treatment facilities is Not working, I will fill all of them and add a few drops of unscented bleach.
And have at least one hundred gallons of usable water, Not much but a lot better than None !!
Oops! Forgot to mention that the distilling process doesn’t cost big bucks but only needs a fire, two pots , a tube to catch the clean water and the storage bottle/pot.
This will probable be very acceptable to your customers.
Frank, it is all well and good that you have a forum to air out suggestions and complaints but some times there are misses in your replies or lack of them. I noticed several (or more) requests for desalting sea water but no answers. I know that distilling process will eliminate the salt and bacteria so why don’t you mention it?
Here in TN, I just don’t have a good reason to be well versed in desalination. I sometimes ignore things in hopes that a more experienced voice will pop up.
Desalination equipment exists, they are used on ships (military ) and sold to third world countries, as well as used in areas where it is hard to find… there are companies that sell them they are large about the size of a huge tank of propane gas you see in some restaurants, I know a guy that has a home size version but list the contact so it’s as good as none. But they do exist many gov’t buy them i.e. Mexico, Dominican Republic and Haiti plus others…I guess Google might help. Let us know I peak around too always thought of getting one for myself…
Anyone wanting to understand ddesalination
just needs to go to a local marine hardware and see all the different ones you can buy at different price points that are used on personal pleasure craft. Also a marine hardware store is a good place to go to find all sorts of things that a lot of the Raiders seem to need and it fair price
I have found out about water purification. There was a comment about putting two drops of chlorox bleach in a quart of unclean water for 30 minutes will clean up and be almost completely bacteria free. Have ever heard of this .
Ask any Boy Scout. You can also use a splash of real Clorox, not the concentrated type, in a 5-gallon water bottle to keep algae from forming. It’s basically what the water company uses in the water they pipe to your home, chlorine.
I live in tucson in the desert about 75 miles from mexico. Any help about supplying water would be very helpful. And the skeleton says “but it’s a dry heat”.
John, there is a product being developed by a company called Air To Water. If you go to Airtowater.com you will see a unit. It is basically a glorified dehumidifier. I am very excited about this technology, and hope to use it in my own home as soon as it is produced. It is technology that was used in Desert Storm for the soldiers. According to what I have read, even dry desert air has enough humidity in order for the technology to work. I’ve also seen YouTube videos where clever people have made their own homemade units…..something to consider.?
If you have a water well and need a very serious non electric water supply system, you should check out the WaterBuck Pump. It’s amazing what this manual shallow and deep well pump can do under human power. http://waterbuckpump.com/
Ooooh. My current backup is an old-fashioned handpump, but I could like this….
Im looking for a good way to test water to see if it is drinkable.

I have 4 dogs and 6 cats at present, all rescued.I but kitty litter in the plastic containers not boxes.By taking bleach and hot water to clean them out when empty,it becomes a great water storage vessel.I also bought water purification pills on Amazon.I am on a well also and when power goes off the well is useless.
I don’t have any cats presently, but I have used those kitty litter plastic containers to take water from the barrel to water pots around the house – nice handle, strong enough to handle water and a nice big mouth on them.
Thanks so much for this offer! I am an 85 yr. old woman who lives alone and I have my own well, but if the elec. goes kakput, I’ve wondered what I would do. Now I can at least find water and clean it to use it. Thanks again!
Is there a way to catch rain water when you don’t have gutters on your house?
Haven’t seen anything in your e-mails about the use of swimming pool water especially salt water(3000ppm) pools?
Dear Frank Bates, Thanks for all this good information.
I already bought some food and seeds that you recommended.
I have started a dbase of artesian wells and springs in Iowa. If anyone wants to contribute ill will give you credit if you like.
I had Sparkletts deliver a dozen (12) 5 gallon sized carboys of spring water to my house and as I use them in the water cooler, Sparkletts automatically replaces the empty bottles, so I always have 12 in an emergency and they are turned over regularly.
I am a disabled vet, 84, I live alone on the Mojave Desert. The water here is terrible but drinkable in an emergency but I keep a couple cases of 1/2 liter bottles of good water in my home all the time. I’m going to buy a small water filter and some storage containers as a backup. I also have a automatic 8KW generator that will kick in when a power outage happens and it is powered by natural gas and will handle my entire (100 amp) power panel on my home. I use oxygen and have a oxygen concentrator plus bottled oxygen as a back up too. I bought one of your emergency food supplies, (good stuff). I don’t anticipate requiring any of this prep but it’s there if I need it. I’m also armed and have a dog that does not take prisoners. Watching for your water filter message. .
As a 75 year old senior who happens to be in poor health, I have some survival things & about 5 gallons of water. My small apartment has no room for a garden. My faith tell me to do all I can & continue to trust in & wait on the Lord.
This me wonder about hand cranks, or various ways of hand-pumping water from, say, a 50′ well. We have a gas generator but might not want to draw attention by running it. Would it be difficult to buy or create an old-fashioned hand pump?
Bev, you can get an old fashioned handpump at a farm
store or from Lehman’s. Just google them. They have a catalog. Lots of good items for self sufficiency.
Thanks for the important information, we are on a county water system and they are always
putting to much chemicals into the water. Most of the time it smells like Clorox ,then there are
times it is med. pink, man you don’t want to bathe or wash clothes with this stuff. My wife refuse
to drink it, so we buy gallons of spring water for that.
Had not thought about an underground spring, will look into that.
Thanks!
WW
I have bought some of your products and read many of your messages. I must admit I am a little skeptical. What you say makes a lot of sence, but I am a little suspicious that perhaps you are just another capitolist selling FEAR, and capitolizing on the countrys loss of confidence in the government and the capitolist system that just raped the world economy and got away with it because they own the government as well as the financial marketplace. It reminds me a little of the cold war when people were selling fear and people were sinking big money into building Bomb Shelters. On the other hand I’m an old Boy Scout. I do believe in being prepaired. I hope you are as much of a patriot as you claim to be and that you are sinsear about trying to share your survival knowlege with your fellow citizens. If you are I salute you, if you are not worth you are what I detest most, a worthless human being.
So what is wrong with capitolism? Is Socialism or Communism better in your mind?
Fear is certainly a powerful motivator.
David,
Of course 4Patriots is capitalistic. Let’s face it, they are here (one of many!) to make money from selling things that might be ‘needed’ during a catastrophe. That doesn’t make them evil, just businessmen. If you are truly wanting to be prepared, then check out the offers they have. However, do some research and you’ll find that there are other alternatives to products they offer here. Some are better, some are not. But doing the research allows you to make an informed decision.
This site is good for not only ‘specialized’ equipment, but they also have links to things like: what to have in your BOB; prepping your home against invasion; etc. Just take everything with a bit of skepticism, do your research and make your OWN choices.
Google ‘Frank Bates’ or ‘4Patriots’ to get more information. As a side note, I have purchased some of their food after comparing it to some of the other offers out there. I’ve tried a little of it, and it actually not bad!

HOW COME ALL THESES SURVIVAL TIPS ARE BASICALLY PIN POINTED AT PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN A HOUSE. WHAT ABOUT A TINY 1 BEDROOM, ON THE TOP FLOOR? NO ROOM FOR AQUAPHONICS, OR A SMALL INDOOR GARDEN. THE WATER IS SO HARD IN SO CAL’S. BEACH CITIES , EVERYONE DRINKS BOTTLED WATER , OR THEY HAVE WATER SOFTNERS INSTALLED OUTSIDE THERE HOMES.I ALWAYS KEEP A MINUMUM OF 6 GALLONS OF WATER. I DRINK VITAMIN WATERS WITH NO SURGER . A GALLON OF WATER WILL LAST ME 3 DAYS. THEN AT .69 CENTS A BOTTLE OF VITAMIN WATER, 12OZ. I DRINK ONE A DAY. I HAVE A WATER FILTER THAT ELEMENATES 99.9% OF ALL BACTERIA AND TURNS INTO CRYSTAL CLEAN DRINKING WATER. GOOD UP TO 900 GALLONS OF WATER.
I am interested in what type of budget friendly filtration devises you are using? Thanks
JJ – keep an eye out in your emails from me. I’m just a couple of weeks away from makeing my solution available to ya’ll!
Thank you Frank for helping us realists prepare for the worst with your top-notch products and advice.

BEING ON THE JOB OF BUILDING WATER TREATMENT & RECLAMATION PLANTS IN PHOENIX, A.Z.,HIGH INTENSITY U.V.LIGHT IS USED IN WATER TREATMENT TO HELP “KILL THE BUGS” THAT THE WATER MAY CONTAIN
Hello. I believe Colorado has laws preventing the collection of rain water. After the recent flooding in that state, one would think that law should get flushed away.(pun intended).
Hey Frank how many 15watt panels do I need to produce 200amps?
or is there another way that’s easier? Wind mill and such. thanks Harold.
http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/calculators/PVWATTS/version1/
15 amps is 1800 watts.
You had better have a serious filter on any rainwater coming off a roof. The bacterial count because of bird droppings is pretty scary.
Water is a complicated resource, and you should do some serious research before making a firm plan. Clorox will clean most microbial problems up, but its storage life is VERY short, so you need to use a pool chemical like HTH instead since the powdered form has a shelf life close to indefinite. Lots of info if you Google it.
Boiling it sufficiently will work, too, but only if you have a great supply of fuel (wood, usually). If you use wood, look into rocket stoves or tin-can stoves since they use only a tiny amount of fuel to boil water one pan at a time.
Sunlight will kill microbial contaminants, also. Water in clear plastic bottles, exposed to 6 to 7 hrs of direct sun, are allegedly purified. Longer, of course, is safer.
This doesn’t do a bit of good with encysted eggs or solid contaminants, though, like the tar & sand components of roofing that come down the gutters, or various toxins from fertilizer, etc. That’s why filters — as good as you can afford — are important even if you steriliize the H2O by boiling or chemically treating it.
Keep in mind that if you’re in this for he long haul in a SHTF scenario, your water supply & treatment need to handle more than just temporary needs. Think of your situation after a year or so ….. will your plan still work?
Wells are a great resource — unless you have a 330-footer, like me. Possible to raise water by hand, but hardly an ideal solution. Thank heaven for the pond, though its water will need treatment, and require carrying 150 feet uphill.
We are routinely 40-50 percent off grid, with the capability to go 100 percent if needed. Adding a wind turbine to the system for charging on those windy dark days and nights. As for water, we collect in rain barrels from our flat roof house, and can route water from the barrels into our in ground pool..holds approx. 26,000 gals..we can boil the water to purify and pasteurize too in our solar oven…we keep about 50-60 2 liter bottles in the house filled with tap water as quick reserve..
I think if you have deep well and can access your water by manual pump you should be ok. Ground water has a natural filtration process it can pass over a series of bed rock and by naturally filtrated. Am I right in this line of thought?
Yes, but pulling water up by hand 330 ft (in my case) will turn you into the State Champion Arm Wrestler, if it doesn’t kill you first.
GROUND WATER FILTERS IT SELF THROUGH AS LITTLE 80 FEET OF DIRT/SOIL MIX BUT A GOOD FILTER FOR METALS AND PATHOGENS IS ALWAYS A GOOD INVESTMENT.
Got the power for patriots DVD for my son in law who is a millwright – they have a well and the pump will run off it. I am nearly 68 and don’t expect to survive a disaster but want to be sure my family survives. My house was built in 1890 and the whole cellar is a cistern. Might have to clean it up and use it!
I have a well that I get all my water from daily. I also have a generator and a plug to tap into if we lose power. If we can’t use generator I have a hand pump that within a 1/2 hour I can install the hand pitcher pump and have water for ever if need be.
Right at the moment where we have lived for 20 something years, our well has never been a big producer. if toilet was left running, it can empty the well. Through the seasons that we don’t have winter, we collect rainwater from the roof of the barn into big stocktanks. We use that to water our stock and save on the water from the house. Use a front loading wsher to save on water as well. Back in the day when we first built, didn’t have the money to install water in the house as the well was so deep, it ate up our cash we had to get it drilled. So for a few years, we had a cowtank in the cellar and a hand pump in the kitchen. Again, rainwater was stored. In winter time, we brought in pails of snow and let it melt on stove in cellar, then poured it through teatowels into the tanks. We never waste water as we know it should never be wasted for any reason. To water our garden, we had a pond dug so rainwater and surface water fill it. Again, a handpump over in the garden pulls the water from there to fill pails. Lots of added work I know, but we have a clear conscience using that much water with no worries of emptying the well and besides that pond water is better for the garden anyways.
I haven’t started building my off the grid power yet. But I am collecting the supply’s I need to do what I need to deal with what is coming. I want to thank you for the book & dvds for power 4 patriots. they are very helpful. I hope a lot more people invest in them. All the tips that I have received from you are very helpful. thank-you! David
For those looking for the Lifestraw, just click the link in the blue box above.
where can we get the lifestraw water filter????
Hi Frank,
Unfortunately I live in a community where it would not be possible to do this. I have a number of boxes with liners that you fill with water, but they won’t last more than a few months, at best. So I’m not sure what to do over the long haul. It may affect an awful lot of people though. I dread to think of the circumstances. Thanks for your guidance anyway.
Mary Vig.
I have a well in a secret place on the rear of my property. The borough ordered everyone on “city water. They made me destroy the lines to the house from the well; but the well is intact. I would pull the submersible well pump out and hook up a mechanical pump. The water is pure.
would you believe that because i live inside city limits that the city has made it illegal to have a well. even when you own your property you are never truly free to use it as you please.
Have spring water would like to build system to purify using natural sourses.
Great article!
Thanks Frank,
You have been very helpful in the information for the off the grid issue..
Thank you very much
NAK.
Hey Frank, (need Advice) …. help!
We had a spring water on our land hidden in a cave
1. It belong to the Kekaha Protestant Church…. Allodial Grant No. 990. Our church name is Mauna Ziona (Mount Zion)
2 Hawaii Conference Foundation United Church of Christ claims title of all the Hawaiian Churches. But forgot about our church…(KPC) I was told to sign the trusteeship over to them or
be dismissed from my Pastoral ship I challenges them;
3. As Administrator I told them in writing to go to hell…..The land manager of the HCFUCC found out about the spring water well! that we owned. In 1972 he went to the City and County and told them of our hidden ground spring water well…. The State came to claim the land by an Executive order…with out compensation….HCFUCC sold the land to the State….
4. HCFUCC and the State and County of Hawaii made their agreement assuming that the HCFUCC held title to the land… They drew up a fraud lease and had the church moderator and wife to sign the agreement. in 2005 the HCFUCC wanted to sell a portion of the land and I stopped them by counteracting their so called claims…
5. I was brought before the circuit court on a four year court case and I won….
6. The State (Attorney General Office) intern claimed title to a 2.8 acres that they bought from the HCFUCC. and I was defaulted by the District Court because I could not come up with an Attorney to represent me and the Church…
Every attorney were afraid to challenge the “State AG. Office their Boss. I filled for a dismissal on the bases of a wrong venue; ” land Issue” the judge said no! you have been defaulted I set the rule in my court.
A friend of a friend asked his wife’s who works for an attorney to help me and she did; Although I was defaulted I asked her to file in the Appellate Court and we won the case…
7. The appellate court found out of the fraud land taking and reprimanded the District Court judge and the A G. Office. stating that when a land issue is before the court ! that issue is priority over any lease, etc. where as the case is dismissed…
8. The State and County now trying to say that they have an Executive order! Which I am saying that they are holding a fraudulent taking of the land; Embezzlement for not pay of their taking; and Per jury for claiming title of the property’s…
The State of Hawaii Attorneys are afraid of losing their license in Hawaii for going after the AG. Office; Governor; and the Mayors Office to make the wrong right…NAK.
Norman I salute you for tilting at windmills and winning the battle. However, Your battle isn’t over yet. Here is a suggestion and I hope that I am in time to assist you. First, seek out-of-state attorney that doesn’t care about the good ole boy government in HI. Next you will need to build a grass roots support team. Get the locals involve, explain how it affects them, show how the government and HCFUCC profits from this fresh water spring. Use the freedom of information act to get your information. Tract the people involved. See who they are what they do and why they do it. (Take down names and expose them for what they are. Have others state your cause. That is other people, group agencies ect… Make them feel the pressure from other sources so that they don’t just focus on you and your group. Show them up for the incompetent, greedy people that they are, record it and put it on the air using a third party source like a high power newspaper or network like ABC, NBC, CBS New your Times, LA Times. Anything that is not controlled or associated by Hawaiian government, on the Island influence or agencies that must do day to day business with such agencies. Most important, ask for financial assistance to help support your legal battles. Have an accountant keep tract of this and be transparent. Remember, those that have the money tend to get what they want in court as well as outside court.
Greetings. I am in GA. I live in an area that has access to the Ogeechee river, but our area has been affected by a plant operating upstream, and we have had some fish kills due to low waters levels not being able to flush away the dumping from the plant. I have a deep well on my property, it has an electric pump. I have purchased three 55 gallon FEMA approved plastic barrells for water storage., If I use my well to fill these barrells with well water, do I need to put a chemical of any kind in the barells for long term water storage?
HTH is probably the best option, and it’s cheap. This is one good explanation of it here:
http://www.tngun.com/pool-shock-for-water-purification/
Keep in mind that this will only kill microorganisms like bacteria, not contaminants or industrial poisons/solvents/chemicals. Filters ar good for most solid or particulate contaminants, but not much good against chemical contaminants, which might b a problem for you, depending on what the plant is dumping in your river. This bears some research, definitely..
Where can one get a Lifestraw Personal Water Filter ? Good info to think about and make plans to estiblish water resources.
I’m in the works of installing an emergency water system. I live on a year round white water river. Even though the water looks pure, it really isn’t. My system is designed to lift the river water from a pump located at the rivers edge and run it through an activated carbon filtration system. This water will be held in a 500 gallon tank until its use. The tank water will be pumped from the tank and pass through an ultra violet light for purification to the house by means of a 12v rv pump to the house. The electrical back up system for the river pump is by an emergency generator and the back up for the 12v pump is a solar back up. The system is designed for emergency use only but will be sufficiant for drinking and utility use. I recommend which ever way a person goes to have good water, have the water tested prior to consumming.
Mel, I don’t know where people get the idea that UV light is used for purification purposes it doesn’t work. As a expert on water purification, I must strongly suggest that you continue to use the carbon filtration system to remove the impurities but also include a chemical means of purification. For example, a quarter cup of bleach per 500 gal tank will kill any bacteria that may be in the water. Have it aerated, much like an aquarium. The Oxygen will also kill any bacteria. But if it is stored, then use the bleach. Bleach will breakdown in less than 24 hours and can be drink in five minutes after introduced into the tank. Think of what you would do for your swimming pool. You put bleach in to control the bacteria growth and after a few hours you can go swimming. We do this all the time in the Army when we are out in the field. We put a quarter cup of bleach in the water trucks, let them shake to their final destination. The water is safe to drink at the final destination. If you have a holding pond then use plants to purify the water. Lilies work just great. When in the field I would have raw sewage go to 7 to 9 different ponds. each pond would have lilies in it. as the water goes from pond to pond the water would become cleaner and cleaner. Now, I know you may not have the time nor the space to do this, but the principle is still the same – use the plants to clean your water from one pond to another.
Seriously considering a Bore.
Less than $2000 in Perth (Australia) Cost of water is one consideration
but security of supply is another.
We have a Grid connect 1 .3 kW solar array and can expand array and add Batteries should we need to.
If you live on any sort of water, salt or fresh you can build an evaporation desalinization unit of PVC pipe and visqueen plastic sheeting. Works well as long as the water stays calm and the sun is shining
Frank, please tell Karol Handcock that if she has not read 1 Cor & 2 Cor of KJV of 1611 A.D. that she has to follow the instrutions in the book of John that he recorded by instruction by the Holy Spirit. She will find out that if she has not been born again by the water and the Spirit by being immersed in a water grave putting away the old person and rising out of the water born again washing away the old sins to live as a Christian. She will be called to live in the new world when God is ready to call her. Thank God for your blessings thru Jesus the Christ who is the door into heaven. Search the Scriptures and do what you are told to do to build treasures in heaven.
thanks so much frank. have received my order and i am so pleased about receiving such a well produced guide. i can’t wait till i am able to start renovating our house and doing my best to follow your great advice.
thanks so much

Can you take water from a fresh water lake and use it for drinkng and other uses. Can it be boiled or treated ?
Growing up I played on golf courses that had well water for drinking. There were hand pumps that we would pump to get the water flowing. We live on property with our own well. Are hand pumps still a viable option?
We use 55 gallon drums and have one for each member of our family stored in the garage off the ground (to keep it from tasting like cement). Of course this is only for a 30 day supply (cooking, washing, drinking, bathing, etc.) but if you look into purifications systems, filters, and the gas it would take to boil a small amount of water, it can be extremly pricey to refill those 55 gallon drums after the 30 days are over. So as a back up in the case that we run out of that and need to refill from an alternate water source we have a few bottles of powdered clorine (the kind you would use for cleaning a hot tub) as a way to purify the water of any harful bacteria. MUCH cheaper than filters and purification systems. There is a 24 hour period you need to wait after treating the water so the clorine can kill those harmful bacteria and then evaporate from the water, which is why we have multiple drums, for the grace period of cleaning that water.
Hi Frank and Folks,
Water would be a valluable resorce in a crisis situation, I feel the takers would be after you share as well as anything else they could take away for the less fortunate. I read Mr Merrits comment on a still, and yes that is a great way to go. Now about a quick distilling unit. How about a large pressure cooker, remove the pressure valve, and plume the fitting to accept a coil, copper was good in the whiskey trade, but there are many materials that would carry steam away into cooling coils which can be cooled by running the tubing through cold water. The idea being to turn your steam back into water. Now no cheating and running mash through these things. If you need to clean out a well cheap use a 3 to 4″ plastic pipe open on both ends, plum a fitting about a foot or so from the bottom, pump air to the fitting useing a large voulme from a large air tank the rising air pulls water and the muck up from the bottom of the well very nicely and over the side of the well head or top. We used a big air supply tank with a quick open and shut off valve for an air supply. The bigger the suction pipe the better if you have enough vollume of air to blow down the feed air supply. Have fun. Old Hugh
Hi Frank,
My wife and I have our own well. Unfortunately, it is wired to the grid. My plan is to get the main fuse box wired in a fashion to allow a remote energy source to get power in – generator, battery power from solar array. We also have a sizeable natural pond in our property. It is about three acres in size and about 15 feet deep. If all else fails, we will be hauling by bucket for awhile until I can get my small surface pump set up.
Keep up the good work.
Mike
Frank, I’ve read a book about the evacuation of the capital city of Cambodia under Red orders. As would be the situation here with many miles of built-up suburbs intervening between Falls Church and open country, escape roads were promptly congested, causing people to spend days and nights in their cars. Presumably, people could turn on water faucets along the way to obtain water in this area (not so in Cambodia), but buying gasoline would very soon be impossible, I’m sure.
I believe that staying put is best for this family, partly because we have no available retreat and are about 90 years old. Thanks for the advice, however.
I live in a neighborhood in AZ and have a year-round swimming pool. Will that water be safe to drink with a lifestraw? Is there a way to purify it for cooking? Should I be prepared to cover it? Thanks for all your great prep ideas for those of us who are just awakening…
Thank you for sending this important info.
Do you know if the Life Straw has a shelf life.
I’ve had one for 15 years and never used it.
Is it still trustworthy and safe to use?
Thank you.
Excellent advice! I have a well however, I am still on the power grid & have to do more research about solar panels. Keep in touch, Thanks!
Frank:
I have a gravity fed water system into my home from a 5000 gallon cistern holding tank.
Minimum pressure w/o boosting is about 30 PSI. The water is filtered though 1 micron
filters. Severe downpours create short term turbidity, but that’s about as bad as it gets.
Being in a rural farm setting is about the best I can hope for.
Donna, look at bio sand filters to pretty much completely filter most water sources. these are cheap and used in third world countries by NGOs all the time. I would then use a secondary filter.
Why not use a dehumidifier and collect water from the air with it? It’s cheaper and most people have one sitting around in their basement. Make a solar generator and you can run when the power grid is down.
@Donna1923 – Regarding cleaning your well water with a Berkey Water system: You say the water in your old well is “dirty”. That is a pretty broad term. The first thing you need to do is find out exactly what contaminants it contains that need to be filtered out, i.e. soil or clay, bacteria, minerals, etc. You should be able to find out where you can have a water sample tested from your state health department. Once you know what you have, you can better determine what kind of filter would work for you. Don’t take the word of the first water purification company you talk to, without first doing as much independent research as you can. Try searching online for water filtration along with whatever contaminants are found in your water. I am still trying to deal with my own problem of high dissolved iron content in a fairly new well. I actually had a salesperson try to convince me that my iron problem would be solved by their system which worked by adding more iron to the water. Good luck!
AN OLD FASHION STILL IS A GREAT SOURCE OF PURIFYING WATER. PLANS CAN BE FOUND ON MANY INFO SITES, BUT DON’T PUT IT OFF OR YOU WILL BE LIKE MY BLOG, “ALL KNOWING & NON-DOING”.
Consider water purification unit now while your money has enough value to buy it. These are the times in which we need to convert much of our savings into need items. I use a General ecology Seagull 4 which takes all out down to .4 micron. The portable unit is affordable and I have one for each member of my family. GREAT for a bug out bag also.
I live in suburbs, almost like a small city. There is a poluted stream about a mile from me, so not really a water option. I can collect rain water, but need to purchase a water purifier and bottle it. I have a basement with plenty of room for storage. Like Cynthia, I am mother, grandmother & great grandmother. All kids live with me, some working, most not, so money is very tight. It is hard to store supplies because I have so many. We have alternate plans, if needed to evacute. Problem, is getting enough supplies together. I bought the Power 4 Patriots complete guides several months ago. It has terrific instructions for everything. Was well worth the money. And I have found they have truly kept cost down wherever possible. We all are Christians and believe we are at the beginning of the “End Times” and must prepare before the anti christ appears. I can not caution everyone strong enough on this. If you are a believer, you know to take his mark will condemn you, but God has cut tribulation time from 3 1/2 yrs to 5 months, so will need supplies for that time. However, we have seen the terrible storms come up, Katrina/Sandy, and know government is of little or no help. Some Sandy victims still on the street with nothing, all of us need to prepare incase our areas are hit.
I did not realize there was a blog site for Power 4 Patriots, I really appreciate this.
Research Ram Pumps if you have your own spring water source. They pump continually do not require electricity. Youtube has many videos of how to make your own, using easily found fittings and valves.
One way to supply drinking water is to build a simple wooden box with a glass lid placed in a sunny area. The box needs to be sealed and the glass lid needs to be at an angle.
Inside the box you put half a pvc pipe cut lengthwise with open side up. With the bottom of the glass making contact with one side of the open end of the pvc secured in place. Also make a hole on the bottom of the pvc.
Place a glass or container under the hole added to the pvc and let the sun do its thing. This is a slow method but it works and if you make two it will be twice as fast.
It is easy, I hope I am making sense. Good luck, God Bless, Take Care
Rush me the water info. You may be interested in our site as well. ThePatriotPage.com Thanx Spence
I’ve been told roofing shingles contain asbestos – and it is not safe to collect
rain water for drinking or even watering a vegetable garden for that matter.
I live in central PA> We have city water, however they put so many chemicals in it, its hard to drink. I F’ing refuse to buy bottled water.(I can see and walk to the river from my place just across the street and down the bank).. So I bought a Big Berkey water filter. It will filter about 2 gallons a day. Takes out all the taste from the chemicals and it’s literally good to drink. So I keep about 5[6 jugs of water at all times. For the money I paid. I think this is probably the best system out there. It uses 4 filters which you can clean and reuse and it removes 99.999% of whatevers in the water. Good for 250 gallons at a crack. In the 3 years I’ve had it I’m no where near that. Maybe 50 gals. It sits in my entry foyer, and does its job. If I need fresh, clean, good tasting water. I go out there and draw a glass. As a plus, it’s kinda outside but covered and it’s usually ice cold. Especially at this time of year. I use the foyer almost like a refer this time of year ..It’s free. Now to go get the turkey fryer out, and fired up. I ate at friends yesterday, my bird wasn’t completely thawed, it is today. Fried turkey takes about 30 to 40 minutes. and it’s over. Just be careful with your fryer and keep an extinguisher close to hand. Too many horror stories about turkey gone wrong.
I live in a rural area. My family and I have a well with a pump. When the power goes out, so does using the well with the pump. We recently renovated an old well with new pipe and an old fashioned hand crank well pump. The water in the well is dirty. Recently I purchased a Berkey Water system to clean our existing water so that I could stop buying bottled water. My question is does anyone know if the Berkey system will clean the water from my old well so that it is fit to drink? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks!
Your treatment system is a good start, but your advice to look for springs or drill wells is not much use here in the DESERT of southern California. Our principal water source is heavily polluted with sodium chloride, and your system does nothing to remove it. What about other nasties like copper sulfate, zinc chloride, etc?
I do not see survivalists as able to fabricate a reverse osmosis system with technology available to them in a post-collapse scenario. The best hope is probably solar distillation. The good news is that it gets everything: salts and bugs. All you need is glass or plastic sheets. Post-collapse these will still be available for a while, and if industrial capability eventually recovers, we could be OK.
It will be nice to see Los Angeles depopulated to a sustainable level.
Frank,
for obvious reasons this has been a concern of mine, also. I am on a well. Here is a site that I have been saving for future reference that you might share with others:

Also people should be aware of Berkey filters; they come in several sizes, long-life filters & reportedly highly efficient. I plan to get one of their smaller ones, just in case. I have a creek, too.
I have no bug-out plan. I’m the grandma. I would not leave without my kids & grandkids, & I am the only one in the family with rural property that could potentially house & sustain us all. The hard part of that is that I feel like I need to plan for an extended family’s needs, not just my own, & I am not a kid anymore! I pray that all of this prepping will never be necessary, but I would rather have things ready & not need them, than to be watching my family starve & wishing I had done something. Keep talking, Frank.
